What kind of guitar should i get?

Im not rich, im still in high school without a job, and im getting into playing guitar. I have a crappy one from target but i know i need a new one. I am wanting one thats well not a piece of crap, but not too expensive. I don’t really care for the whole warlock guitar thing, mostly i like kind of like the les paul look. Any suggestions for a place to buy one or guitar styles?

All things considered… now is a pretty good time to buy from your local music store. Most are hurting due to the slow times we’ve had. This is your chance to purchase a guitar from a place where you can try them out first. Nothing against buying online, but… it is always a risk.

It is pretty hard to go wrong with a Fender. There are several Fender factories around the world, and different “levels” of guitars to chose from. If you’re on a budget, a Fender from the Mexico factory or even a Squire model are pretty solid. I know several full time musicians who not only play on, but prefer, a Mexican Fender.

If you like Gibson models, then visit your local store. I’ve never been really fond of the Epiphone models, but they really are worth considering.

Music stores are like car dealerships; the price on the sticker is just their “asking” price. Offer them less. If you’re dealing in cash, offer them considerably less. Chances are they will go for it. If you’re paying with a credit card, barter them down. Music shops tend to be a little rigid on price if a person is wanting to finance through the store. Don’t be afraid to try. If your offer is even remotely reasonable, they will probably go for it.

I might recommend avoiding Ebay. Nothing against it, but… most music dealers put the guitars that are “dogs” on Ebay. In other words, the guitars that won’t do well on their sales floor.

Musician’s Friend is good, but you’re still buying sight unseen. Always risky. You can have 100 identical Fender Strats, and 5 will be incredible, 20 above average, 50 average, 20 below average, and 5 clunkers. Just the nature of the beast.
